LEMOORE, Calif. — If you have ever walked through Downtown Lemoore and noticed sections of decorative brick-style sidewalks, you may have passed over a small piece of local history without even realizing it.
The brick stamping seen throughout parts of downtown traces back to a Downtown Streetscape Project that took place between 2000 and 2002. The project was intended to help beautify the downtown area while also allowing for improvements involving irrigation and electrical connections throughout portions of downtown.
The decorative brick stamping was not automatically installed throughout the entire downtown area. According to available information, it was only added in locations where sidewalks were already being replaced due to safety hazards and when property owners chose to pay the additional cost for the decorative brick stamping design.
Over time, the project reportedly received mixed reviews because of the additional expense. There were also discussions that the concept may have worked better as a larger overall downtown streetscape improvement project instead of being completed one section at a time, which some believed could make it difficult to ever fully complete throughout downtown.
In 2011, staff discussions reportedly included the possibility of using Redevelopment Agency funding assistance for the project, but California redevelopment agencies were later eliminated by the state soon afterward.
Planning and downtown revitalization discussions from that time also focused on creating a unique “turn of the century” style atmosphere in Downtown Lemoore through decorative paving, lighting, landscaping, benches, bicycle racks, and other pedestrian-friendly improvements.
Recently, me and my family had the opportunity to walk around Downtown Lemoore around 10 or 11 at night, and honestly, it was a great experience. Downtown was peaceful, people were friendly, and it turned into a fun little adventure as we started spotting different brick stamped sections throughout the area.
That curiosity is what led me to start looking into the history behind the bricks.
The more I learned, the more interesting it became. It almost felt like a scavenger hunt trying to locate all the different stamped sections hidden throughout downtown. I even spotted a couple of sections near the old fire station and nearby parts of downtown, which made exploring even more fun.
Sometimes we walk past pieces of local history every single day without realizing the story behind them.
Downtown Lemoore already has a unique atmosphere at night, but discovering these historic brick stamped sidewalks added something extra special to the experience. It gave the feeling that every section of downtown has its own story and personality.
Hopefully, more projects like this continue in the future because they truly add charm and character to the community while giving residents and visitors something fun to discover.
If you have never gone looking for the brick stamped sidewalks in Downtown Lemoore, you might want to give it a try during your next evening walk.
