Coalinga, CA – March 13, 2025 (Meeting Date: January 16, 2025)
The Coalinga City Council set a new course for leadership during its January 16, 2025, meeting, reorganizing its ranks after certifying the November 5, 2024, consolidated statewide general election results. With a unanimous vote on Resolution Number 4247, the council welcomed back reelected members Roger Schindler, James Horn, and Jose “Manny” Ramirez, alongside City Treasurer Don Cahakina. The session concluded with Nathan Vosberg elected as mayor and James Horn as mayor pro tem, blending seasoned experience with a renewed vision for Coalinga’s future.
The reorganization unfolded with reflective remarks from council members, highlighting their dedication to unity and progress. Vosberg, now mayor, pointed to the council’s transformation over the past two years, stating, “We’ve shown we can set aside personal differences for the greater good of Coalinga.” Horn, stepping into the mayor pro tem role after serving as mayor, emphasized his ongoing regional advocacy through Fresno COG and Cal Vans, vowing to keep Coalinga’s needs front and center. Ramirez, reflecting on his time as mayor pro tem, credited collective effort: “I couldn’t do it without the staff or community—I’m proud to represent our town.”
Councilman Schindler, choosing not to pursue a leadership post, nominated Vosberg for mayor and Horn for mayor pro tem, advocating for fresh perspectives. “Change is good,” he noted, expressing trust in the council’s continued effectiveness. Councilman Hedgecock reinforced this, lauding the team’s cohesion and optimism for Coalinga’s trajectory.
Public comments enriched the discussion, amplifying community voices. Coalinga resident Mary urged consideration of Vosberg’s credentials, citing his near-complete public administration certification and leadership track record. “He’s unique with his education and experience,” she said, praising the council while casting her support. Shane Strawn, a Hanford resident who traveled 40 minutes to back Vosberg, added, “I’ve seen Nathan’s leadership firsthand—he’ll do a fantastic job,” referencing Vosberg’s regional service.
The meeting featured a formal swearing-in, with council members and the treasurer pledging to uphold the U.S. and California Constitutions. Vosberg and Horn’s elections followed, each passing with a unanimous “aye,” signaling strong council alignment. As mayor-elect, Vosberg committed to building on Horn’s regional efforts, ensuring continuity in Coalinga’s advocacy.
With funding challenges and community growth on the horizon, this leadership shift positions Coalinga for steady advancement. The council’s unity, bolstered by public input, reflects a shared resolve to elevate the city.
