Avenal, CA – The Avenal Police Department is taking significant steps to enhance public safety and community engagement, with new technology, grant-funded initiatives, and expanded outreach programs. At the February 27 City Council meeting, Police Chief Velasco outlined several key updates that aim to reduce crime, improve traffic safety, and strengthen ties with the community.

Flock Cameras: A Game-Changer for Crime Prevention

One of the most notable updates is the implementation of Flock cameras, a state-of-the-art surveillance system designed to track criminal activity more effectively. These cameras are not your average surveillance tools—they can identify vehicles by color, make, model, and even partial license plates.
Chief Velasco emphasized how these cameras have already led to multiple arrests in other communities. “Criminals often travel from town to town, but with Flock cameras, we can track their movements and gather solid leads,” he said. The cameras will be strategically placed at key entry and exit points around Avenal, creating a perimeter that deters criminal activity.

Traffic Safety Improvements

The department has also seen a dramatic reduction in traffic accidents, with incidents dropping from 10-14 per month to just 2-18. This improvement is attributed to increased patrols and targeted enforcement efforts.
To further enhance traffic safety, the department is applying for grants to fund a dedicated traffic investigator who will work alongside detectives. This cross-trained officer will handle complex traffic cases, including fatalities, while also participating in community outreach and education programs.

Community Engagement and Outreach

The Avenal Police Department is doubling down on its commitment to community engagement. Chief Velasco highlighted the success of recent events like Coffee with the Cop and the Teddy Bear Drive, which brought residents and officers together in a collaborative effort to support local children.
Additionally, the department is working to establish an Explorer Program in partnership with Scouting America. This initiative will provide young people with hands-on experience in law enforcement, fostering future leaders and strengthening community ties.

Grant Funding and Federal Support

The department has successfully modified its COPS grant to fund three new detective positions, focusing on combating violent crime, gangs, and narcotics. Chief Velasco also met with representatives from Congressman David Valadao’s office to discuss federal funding opportunities.
“We’re optimistic about securing additional grants to support our efforts,” said Velasco. Our goal is to make Avenal a safer place for everyone, and we’re grateful for the support from our local and federal partners.
