Avenal marked a proud and historic milestone as the city celebrated the graduation of its first-ever Fire Academy class, officially welcoming the first firefighters hired to serve under the City of Avenal Fire Department.

The ceremony, led by Fire Chief Jacob McAfee, was filled with excitement, gratitude, pride, and a clear sense that the community was witnessing something meaningful. From the opening remarks, the moment was described as “truly monumental,” not only because a class was graduating, but because Avenal was taking a major step forward in building its own fire service.

“This is truly a historic night,” Chief McAfee shared during the ceremony, noting that the city was not just graduating its first fire academy, but also welcoming the first firefighters ever hired by the organization.

The graduating class, known as Avenal Fire Academy Class 2026, represents more than a group of new firefighters. They represent the beginning of a new chapter for public safety in Avenal.

For years, the idea of a city fire department was only a vision. As speakers explained during the ceremony, the department once existed only as an ordinance and a plan on paper. There were no firefighters, no internal academy class, and no local fire department structure of this kind. That changed with this graduating class.

The evening also included a prayer led by law enforcement chaplain Anthony Guerra, who asked for protection, courage, peace, and strength for the firefighters as they prepare to serve the community. His prayer recognized the serious responsibility these men are taking on and honored their willingness to answer the call to protect others.

Throughout the ceremony, speakers emphasized the dedication, discipline, and intense training required to reach this moment. The graduates went through demanding instruction that included ground ladder work, emergency medical response, command and control, wildland operations, hose lays, auto extrication, residential search, victim removal, and ventilation training.

One instructor described the academy as fast-moving but highly focused, explaining that the firefighters completed thousands of feet of ladder and hose work, practiced real-world rescue scenarios, and learned skills intended to prepare them for the calls they may face in Avenal.

The training focused heavily on what matters most during an emergency: saving lives, protecting homes, and being ready when residents call 911.

The message to the new firefighters was clear. When they take the oath, they are taking ownership of the emergency. They are agreeing to respond, to act, and to serve with courage, skill, and purpose.

Avenal City Manager Anthony V. Lopez also spoke from the heart, calling the moment a major milestone for the community. Lopez, who grew up in Avenal and later returned to serve the city, reflected on how meaningful it was to finally say, “This is our fire department.”

He spoke about Avenal’s history, from its early days as an oil town to its growth as a working-class community, and said the fire department is part of building a stronger future for local families.

Lopez also expressed pride in the people selected to serve, calling them some of the best of the best. He said the community will benefit from their training, their commitment, and their willingness to serve.

The ceremony included the official swearing-in of new fire personnel and badge-pinning moments with family members, making the event both formal and deeply personal. Families, city leaders, staff, and community members watched as the new firefighters took their oath and stepped into their new roles.

The event also highlighted the partnerships that helped make the fire department possible. Chief McAfee thanked city staff, public works, community development, code enforcement, the police department, Fresno County EMS, surrounding fire service partners, Fresno City College, Cal Fire, and others who supported the effort.

He emphasized that public service is built on relationships, and that the success of Avenal’s new fire department came from many people and agencies working together.

The night ended with one final round of applause for the first graduating class in the history of the Avenal Fire Department. The room was filled with pride, not only for the graduates, but for the city itself.

For Avenal, this was more than a ceremony. It was a celebration of progress, public safety, community pride, and a future where residents can say they have a fire department of their own.
