KINGS COUNTY, Calif. — What started as a personal battle with weight, depression, and loss has evolved into a mission to inspire others, promote healthier lifestyles, and bring people together through fitness and community involvement.

Matthew Westwood, a longtime Kings County resident, recently sat down with Kings Network News to discuss his weight loss journey, his passion for sumo wrestling, and his plans to help others pursue healthier lives.

For many years, Westwood struggled with obesity while dealing with significant personal hardships, including the loss of both of his parents. The emotional toll led to depression, isolation, and a period in which he withdrew from many of the people and activities he once enjoyed.

“There was a point where I stopped living and was simply existing,” Westwood explained.

At his heaviest, Westwood said he weighed nearly seven hundred pounds. Concerned about his future and determined to make a change, he began searching for ways to improve his health and regain control of his life.

That search eventually led him to the world of sumo wrestling.

Discovering Sumo Wrestling

While many people view sumo wrestling as a sport centered around size, Westwood says there is much more to it than most realize.

The sport requires balance, strength, mobility, discipline, endurance, and technique. Through sumo wrestling, he found motivation, structure, and a community that encouraged him to continue pushing forward.

What began as curiosity soon developed into a passion that helped fuel his commitment to improving his overall health.

Westwood credits the sport with helping him develop a renewed sense of purpose while giving him measurable goals to pursue.

Training in Canada

Westwood’s fitness journey eventually took him to Alberta, Canada, where he trained under fitness coach Cole Robinson in a highly structured environment focused on accountability, discipline, and healthy living.

During his three-and-a-half-month stay, Westwood said he lost more than one hundred pounds, dropping from the six-hundred-pound range to below five hundred pounds.

Although a family emergency required him to return home earlier than expected, he says the experience changed his life and provided valuable lessons that continue to guide him today.

Rather than viewing the interruption as a setback, Westwood has remained focused on continuing his progress while building a healthier future here in Kings County.

Bringing Sumo Wrestling to Hanford

Westwood is now helping bring sumo wrestling to the local community through an upcoming family event scheduled for Sunday, June 7, 2026, at DMV Plaza 76, located at 811 W. Hanford-Armona Road in Hanford.

The event begins at 11 a.m. and is designed as a family-friendly gathering featuring a variety of activities for all ages.

Activities include:

  • Waterslide
  • Bring-your-own water gun activities
  • Sumo wrestling competition
  • Hanford Hurricanes youth football sign-ups
  • Free hot dogs and soda while supplies last
  • Free haircuts

Participants interested in competing in the sumo wrestling competition can enter for $5, with the winner receiving a $50 cash prize.

For Westwood, the event is about more than wrestling. It is about introducing people to a sport that helped change his life while encouraging families to spend time together and become more active.

He hopes the event serves as an opportunity to inspire others who may be struggling with obesity, depression, or personal challenges to take the first step toward positive change.

“People think of sumo and only see the size of the athletes,” Westwood explained. “What they don’t always see is the discipline, movement, balance, training, and commitment behind the sport.”

Looking Toward the Future

Today, Westwood says he weighs approximately five hundred sixty pounds and has set an ambitious goal of reaching the three-hundred-pound range by the end of the year.

His goals extend beyond the scale. He hopes to improve his fitness to the point where he can perform calisthenics, complete pull-ups, and participate in activities that once seemed out of reach.

Westwood is also working to reconnect with fitness coach and longtime friend Terrence as they explore opportunities to organize future community workouts and fitness activities throughout Kings County.

According to Westwood, improving public health starts by creating an environment where people feel encouraged rather than judged.

“We’re going to get Kings County fit,” Westwood said. “We’re going to get the whole state fit, the whole country fit, the whole world fit.”

Building Something Bigger

Westwood’s vision extends beyond his own transformation.

He hopes to eventually create a fitness-focused living environment where individuals facing similar challenges can support one another while working toward healthier lifestyles under professional guidance.

His belief is simple: meaningful change becomes easier when people have a community supporting them.

For Westwood, this journey is no longer just about losing weight. It is about rebuilding confidence, helping others, and proving that no matter where someone starts, positive change is possible.

Looking Ahead

Following the interview, Matthew and I continued our conversation off camera and discussed future opportunities, community involvement, and several projects currently in development.

During that discussion, it became clear that Matthew’s passion for helping others, sharing positive stories, and making a difference in the community aligns with many of the values we strive to promote at Kings Network News.

With a social media audience of more than 40,000 followers on Instagram, Westwood’s message is already reaching far beyond Kings County. Through videos, updates, and personal insights, he has built a following of people who are inspired by his determination, honesty, and commitment to self-improvement. As his journey continues, he hopes to motivate others to pursue healthier lifestyles and overcome obstacles in their own lives.

I’m excited to announce that Matthew will be working with us on several upcoming projects. While we’re not quite ready to share all the details, readers can expect to see much more from Matthew in the near future as we continue developing new content and opportunities together.

This is only the beginning, and we’re looking forward to what comes next.
