HANFORD, CA — A 24-year-old man is in custody following the fatal shooting of a Los Banos woman in what investigators believe was a robbery attempt that turned deadly.
The Hanford Police Department announced that detectives, along with the Street Crimes Unit, have been actively investigating the killing of 25-year-old Sully Cortezneri, which occurred during the early morning hours of March 23. Authorities say the case involved extensive investigative work, including canvassing hundreds of apartments and reviewing hours of surveillance footage.
According to investigators, Cortezneri had traveled to the River Oaks Apartments to meet with 24-year-old Jason Harris. As she was leaving the location, Harris allegedly attempted to rob her. During the confrontation, Cortezneri resisted, and Harris reportedly shot her multiple times. She died at the scene.
Following the shooting, Harris fled, prompting an active search by law enforcement. Detectives later located him near the area of 11th Avenue and Cortner Street. When officers attempted to make contact, Harris ran, leading to a brief foot pursuit. He was ultimately apprehended without further incident.
Police confirmed that Harris was positively identified as the suspect in the shooting. During the investigation, detectives also recovered the firearm believed to have been used in the killing.
Harris has been booked into the Kings County Jail on multiple charges, including murder, robbery, and resisting or obstructing a peace officer.
