VISALIA — After eight years of visible impact across city services and infrastructure, the Visalia City Council has voted to continue Measure N, the city’s half-cent sales tax initiative originally approved by voters in 2016.
The renewal was approved during the council’s March 17 work session following a detailed presentation by Finance and Technology Director Renee Nagel, who outlined how the tax revenue has been used to strengthen essential public services.
Since its implementation, Measure N has generated more than $118 million, supporting a wide range of improvements, including:
-
The hiring of 25 police officers, the acquisition of body cameras, and enhanced public safety initiatives
-
The construction of Fire Station 56
-
More than $27.5 million in street maintenance and repair projects
-
Over $2 million invested in youth and parks programs
Nagel emphasized that Measure N has become a critical source of general fund revenue for the city, allowing Visalia to deliver and maintain services without relying on outside funding.
“We’ve made real, measurable progress,” Nagel told the council, pointing to improved emergency response, safer streets, and better recreational access for families.
City officials noted that accountability and transparency have remained core to Measure N’s implementation. Regular audits, community oversight, and strategic planning have guided spending decisions since the tax was approved.
Councilmembers expressed unanimous support for the renewal, citing both the program’s past successes and its importance to Visalia’s future priorities.
With Measure N’s renewal, the city will continue to invest in infrastructure, public safety, and community services, with further updates to be presented during upcoming budget cycles.
