HANFORD, CA — Two juveniles were arrested on May 6 following a high-risk traffic stop after an officer from the Hanford Police Department observed what appeared to be two vehicles chasing each other near 10th Avenue and Lacey Boulevard around 10:00 p.m.

According to authorities, the officer stopped one of the vehicles and was informed by its occupants that the other vehicle had fired shots at them. The officer immediately alerted other units, resulting in a coordinated response that led to the quick interception of the suspect vehicle.

Inside the vehicle were two juveniles — a 16-year-old driver and a 17-year-old passenger — along with an 8-year-old child found seated in the back. Officers ensured the child’s safety before conducting a search of the vehicle.

The search uncovered two unregistered firearms: a .25 caliber pistol found on the driver and a Sig Sauer P320 9mm handgun equipped with a red dot optic discovered under the passenger seat.

Although early reports suggest the juveniles may have been firing an Orbeez-style gel bead gun during the incident, the alleged victim did not remain at the scene to provide a statement, limiting the scope of the investigation.

Both juveniles were taken into custody and are facing multiple charges, including violations of Penal Code sections 25850 (carrying a loaded firearm in public), 25400(a)(1) (carrying a concealed firearm), and 273 (child endangerment).

Who should be held responsible when a young child is exposed to potential gunfire during a criminal incident—just the juveniles, or also their guardians?
