Avenal Plans Grand Opening for New Pocket Park Behind Boxing Club

AVENAL — Avenal city officials announced this week that a new pocket park located behind the city’s boxing club is nearly complete and scheduled to open to the public in April.

During the City Council meeting on March 27, staff reported that the park’s major features — including shade sails, a small fitness area, play structures, and fencing — have been installed. Final touches, such as ground cover and safety surfacing, are expected to be finished in the coming days.

The council reviewed potential grand opening dates, with April 9, 12, and 16 under consideration. Staff said they would confirm the final date and begin event planning once surfacing and inspections are complete.

The project was funded through a combination of local and grant-supported parks development efforts. It is intended to provide recreational access in a neighborhood that previously lacked green space within walking distance.

Mayor Alvaro Preciado expressed support for marking the opening with a community event, suggesting the city reach out to local businesses and community groups for sponsorships and participation. Councilmembers discussed the possibility of food, games, and giveaways to encourage turnout and promote the new amenity.

The boxing club, which sits adjacent to the park, is expected to coordinate its programming with the new outdoor space once it opens. Officials noted that the site’s central location makes it ideal for youth engagement and community use.

City staff said additional information about the grand opening date and schedule of activities will be released on the city’s website and social media channels once confirmed.
